NORTHWEST SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

This Fall

We open our 2025/26 season with Mahler and Mozart on Sunday November 9th. Mozart's "Overture to The Marriage of Figaro" is a brilliant and effervescent piece that sets the stage for a day of comic chaos, clever disguises, and romantic intrigue. Its unforgettable, rapid-fire melodies and vibrant energy will sweep you off your feet. Experience the perfect curtain-raiser to one of the greatest operas ever written.

Prepare to be moved by Soprano Tracey Furling's exquisite interpretation of the jewel of The Magic Flute: Pamina's heartbreaking aria, "Ach, ich fühl’s" (Ah, I feel it). Soprano Furling captures the aria's profound vulnerability navigating the delicate, sustained phrases and soaring legato lines that define this Mozart masterpiece, conveying Pamina’s deep sorrow as she believes she has lost her love, Tamino.

Continuing with a journey of a conflicted heart! Soprano Furling sings Mozart's concert aria "Vado, ma dove?" ("I go, but where?"). A mesmerizing and emotional piece that captures the inner turmoil of a woman torn between duty and desire. The music beautifully expresses her wavering thoughts and feelings, from moments of restless, agitated questioning to a final, hopeful resolution guided by love. This is a brilliant showcase for sopranos full of dramatic intensity and sublime beauty.

Soprano Furling concludes the aria set with a performance of Mozart's "Ah Chi mi dice mai" from Don Giovanni. A captivating aria that captures the seething rage and bitter heartbreak of the abandoned noblewoman, Donna Elvira. As she arrives on the scene, her music is a whirlwind of emotion, from a cry of desperation to a thunderous vow of vengeance against the infamous Don. This is a thrilling and dramatic showcase of a woman's scorned, perfectly setting the stage for the opera's dark and complex story.

We close the concert with Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4; a radiant and enchanting masterpiece that departs from the epic scale of his earlier works for something more intimate and luminous. The symphony transports you from the mischievous charm of its opening movements to a serene and breathtaking finale, where a single soprano voice, Tracey Furling once again accompanies the orchestra, sings a child's vision of a peaceful heaven. A work of profound beauty and childlike wonder, it is Mahler at his most serene and sublime.

Tracey Furling, soprano

Don't miss a night of passion and power with soprano Tracey Furling and the orchestra! Tracey Furling joins the orchestra for an unforgettable afternoon of operatic drama and symphonic beauty. Experience the fiery rage of Donna Elvira in Mozart's "Ah Chi mi dice mai" from Don Giovanni and the emotional journey of "Vado, ma dove?" A breathtaking afternoon of music culminates with the serene beauty of Mahler's Symphony No. 4, featuring Tracey Furling as the soloist in its sublime, heavenly finale. This is a night of truly captivating music you won't want to miss.

Tracey Furling began her musical journey in Springfield, Illinois, where she captivated audiences from the age of six when at her first performance she sat at the edge of the stage and refused to finish her dance recital. Tracey's formative years were a kaleidoscope of performances, from the formalized stages of dance recitals and school productions to the competitive glow of show choirs. Yet, it was in the intimate setting of her grandparents' living room—just down the street from her childhood home—that she delivered some of her most memorable and celebrated early performances.

At Bradley University Tracey pursued dual undergraduate degrees in Music Business and Vocal Performance. She flourished under the guidance of Dr. Kerry Walters, Andrea Molina, and Molly Sloter, refining her vocal technique and versatility while performing with Bradley's many ensembles. Notably, Tracey sang with the Bradley University Orchestra as a winner of the 2015 Concerto/Aria Competition.

Tracey has become a seasoned performer in the Chicago opera scene and a sought after concert soloist for sacred and choral work, notably performing the soprano solo in Dominic DiOrio’s A Dome of Many Colored Glass with the Chicago choral group Consonance, Norina (Don Pasquale) and Fiordiligi (Cosi fan tutte) performed with Salt Creek Chamber Orchestra.

Very at home with the visual aspect of opera, Tracey’s stage credits include Schaunard in a gender-bent La Femme Boheme; The Soul in a new adaptation of Hildegard von Bingen’s The Order of the Virtues, also featuring work by Pauline Oliveros, both performed with Chicago City Opera; Foreign Woman (The Consul); and Susanna (The Marriage of Figaro). Tracey has proudly spent six seasons on the roster of Consonance; Chicago Choral Artists. She also works closely with Chicago City Opera, Fox Valley Opera, and is a session leader with 'Songs by Heart', a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for people facing age-related memory issues.

Alongside longtime collaborator, Joshua Fath, Tracey was a member of the winning team of the 2025 'Chicago songSLAM Competition'. This past June, Tracey sang in 'The New Voice Festival intensive' in New York City; Tracey recently made her Chicago musical theater debut as Stephen King’s formidable villain, Margaret, in Carrie: the Musical on Halloween weekend; and concluding 2025 on tour in Canada and the American west coast as the soprano soloist with 'The Hans Zimmer Touring Orchestra'.

Through her dedication and vocal artistry, Tracey has established herself as a rising star in the music scene, captivating audiences with her versatility and expressiveness across diverse genres and productions.

Diego Dahle: a rising cellist

A talented 18-year-old cellist from Evanston, Illinois, Diego Dahle has established himself as a prominent young artist. This Fall Dieago began attending the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. Diego began playing the cello at the age of nine, and currently studies with David Ying, cellist in the award winning Ying Quartet and Professor of cello at Eastman. Diego formerly studied with Richard Hirschl, cellist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Professor of Cello at the Roosevelt College of the Performing Arts.

An avid chamber musician, Diego was a member of Quartetto Speranza, a top string quartet at the Midwest Young Artists Conservatory. MYAC is a prominent, nationally recognized youth music education and ensemble program based in the Chicago area. The quartet is coached by Desiree Ruhstrat, violin faculty at Northwestern’s Bienen School of Music. The quartet won 2nd prize at 30th annual Rembrandt Chamber Music Competition, 1st prize at the 2025 Chicago National Chamber Music Competitions, 2nd prize at the 2025 Barnett Chamber Music Competition, Honorable Mentions at the 2025 St. Paul String Quartet Competition, and the Bronze Medal in the Junior strings division of the 52nd annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.

Diego's performance with the Northwest Symphony Orchestra as the Paul Vermel Young Artist Award winner will feature him as the cello soloist in the Shostakovich Cello Concerto.

The Paul Vermel Young Artist Award is an annual solo competition for young instrumentalists, established in honor of the late conductor Paul Vermel by the Northwest Symphony Orchestra (NSO). The award recognizes outstanding craftsmanship and musical ability in young Chicago-area musicians.

More than just a cash prize; the Paul Vermel Award offers the unique opportunity for the winner to perform a solo concerto with the NSO. This is a significant step for a young artist, allowing them to gain valuable experience performing as a soloist with a professional-level orchestra. The competition honors Paul Vermel's legacy as a dynamic conductor and a mentor to young musicians.
