The NSO invite you to gather your musical “Souvenirs” as this concert will be one to remember! We open with the Overture to Verdi’s Nabucco – a celebration of the best themes of this opera! This year’s “Paul Vermel Young Artist” winner joins us to perform Tchaikovsky’s delightful concerto for cello and orchestra, the “Variation on a Rococo Theme.” Reynaldo Hahn’s Suite lets us showcase our wind and brass players in this work depicting an evening with a princess from the Italian Renaissance. The fun “Sorcerer's Apprentice” tops off the concert!

The NSO invites you to enjoy a musical visit to Idyllic Places. The two works by Elgar are short, yet romantically rich and expressive works; the perfect bookends to Diehnelt’s Caprio for oboe and strings. Maestra Diehnelt’s compositional style is best described as a “Nordic Palestrina” as her works possess a lyrical, vocal quality with an attention to beauty and the sense of an unfolding story. The Vaughan Williams Symphony will instantly evoke a idyllic feeling of pastoral landscapes while transporting us through a broad canvas of emotion.

The NSO presents a taste of “Distant Lands” with their performance of Alexander Borodin’s “In the Steppes of Central Asia” which evokes the high steppes of Central Asia and the meeting between Russian and Asiatic caravans. Tchaikovsky’s well-loved Symphony No. 5 incorporates themes and moods of the composer’s homeland. We are excited to present cellist Kyra Saltman as soloist in Richard Strauss’ lesser-known gem Romanze for cello and Orchestra. Join us for the sounds and passions of distant lands!

The NSO “Country Scenes” concert offers some of our favorite composers! Schubert’s “Unfinished” pulses with Viennese energy, drama, and beauty. The NSO’s own principal horn player Charles Sernatinger takes center stage with the playful “Villanelle” of Dukas. Edvard Grieg is known for his pastoral tone-painted. His “In Autumn” is a rarely-perform gem that evokes the characters of autumn; sun, storms, wind and the farmers’ harvest. Smetana, too, paints a vivid country scene in his tone poem “The Moldau” as we follow the river along its course through the Bohemia country side.
